If you enjoy reading any of Peter Brown's history of Late Antiquity and the development of the early church then this book will be an excellent complement. Uhlhorn unfolds the process of a pagan empire transitioning into, at least, a humane empire; this as a work of the Church giving voice to the once voiceless, and revealing a class of people, the poor, who were once invisible. While Uhlhorn does not give an historically naïve, triumphalist account of this period, he does give serious attention to the efforts of the clergy and congregations to alter the social reality of their time.
